Recent & Reoccurring Projects

Each year, our members volunteer their time to help with the summer archaeology camps at Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island.
Elementary- and middle school-aged children get the opportunity to participate in a real excavation at a colonial site, by learning the archaeological process and digging, sifting and classifying artifacts.
GIAS members assist with all parts of the process, sharing their knowledge with the students and often learning a few things themselves. It’s also a great opportunity for amateur archaeologists to gain experience at a low-stress dig site.

GIAS is often called in to discuss the region’s ongoing archeology at various history events and festivals. These include International Archaeology Day and the Living History Festival at Fort Frederica National Monument and Georgia History Day at local schools.
Depending on the event, we may host a booth, assist with activities or even teach a little. We’re always willing to lend a hand to help out our community and talk about archaeology!
Archaeologists, amateur or professional, all really want the same thing: a shovel, a screen, and a historically relevant dig site. We are no different, so we try to get involved with as many digs as possible. We partner with local historical sites like Cannon’s Point Preserve and Fort Frederica National Monument so that we can be involved whenever they start a dig. Whether it’s in the field or in the lab, we aim to be involved!
When we aren’t digging, we also love to learn more about Georgia history. We often schedule fun field trips to historical sites or to see the collections of local collectors and archaeologists.
Every month our members host an archaeological speaker at Fort Frederica National Monument. Our speakers educate meeting attendants on different aspects of archaeological and historical cultures in the Golden Isles. Meetings are usually held from 6:30-8:00 PM on the first Tuesday of each month. Click the link below to find out who is next.
